Making the move from WordPress.com to WordPress.org

Posted on | January 11, 2009 | View Comments

So my first foray into blogging was over at Tactile Jazz, it was a a free site run on wordpress.com.  It served me well as I started to learn the ins and outs of of the blogosphere.  But as I learned more, I wanted to experiment more and while wordpress.com is super easy to get up and running, it wasn’t flexible enough for me. e.g. no flash or javascript supported widgets, or super cool themes

So I sent a quick message over to my friend Scott asking for some help and advise and he said no problemo.  He made some techno-magic happen and 15 minutes later I was opening up my macbook to start installing WordPress and then jumping into the wonderful world of themes, plugins, widgets and that special sauce called FTP.

Props to Scott for being a great guy to help me get up and running, and enduring many questions over IM.

I’m still tweaking things around here so keep an eye out for changes.   I’m also open to any suggestions for must have plugins and for any of you wordpress guru’s if you see something amiss just holler at me.  I’m always looking to improve.

- Gavin

With all of those @'s I would install this plugin: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/reply-to/

Makes replying much more intuitive. :)
  • Nice post. You need to fix Scott's link..

  • @ktown great catch. Link updated

    Very good Gavin.
  • @brooks - thanks. What do you use for your blog?
@cp - I'm not sure if it's quite the best url ever, but I do like gbake. I've got a post in the pipeline where I'm planning on explaining a bit more about my thought process on personal brands and how I got to gbake.com
@Marsha - I was pretty fortunate to not lose anything. I was afraid I'd lose everything as well but since I went from wordpress to wordpress I was able to export/import everything pretty seemlessly. The only thing I lost was my Google juice, but tactilejazz had dropped off since I'd stopped writing all that often so it wasn't much of a lost.

gbake.com, probably one of the best URLs in the history of the interwebs. Glad to see you made the switch Gavin.

    PS: FIRST!
  • I made the move a while back...it was scary. My biggest fear was loosing everything I had blogged about to that moment. YOu are lucky. I had to make the move on my own. I didn't have a computer guru to assist. In the end, I'm glad I did it.
